The Hungarian government has secured an agreement with the European Commission that will unlock billions in European Union funds, previously held up due to governance concerns. This development follows Hungary’s commitment to a series of reforms aimed at improving transparency and the management of EU resources. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged Hungary’s initial efforts to address these issues, including plans to bolster anti-corruption measures and enhance oversight. Additionally, Hungary has agreed to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office as part of its reform agenda.
As part of the agreement, Hungary stands to gain substantial EU funding to bolster key areas such as infrastructure, energy security, housing, transportation, and business development. Further financial support from the EU is contingent on the implementation of additional reforms, which will also address higher education and academic governance. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed that the deal encompasses a total of €16.2 billion in EU funding, describing it as a significant boost to Hungary’s economic growth and investment plans.
Another notable outcome of the agreement is the reinstatement of Hungarian students into the Erasmus exchange program, which will take effect in the coming academic year. This move is seen as a positive step towards re-establishing educational links with the rest of Europe, following previous disruptions.
Despite progress in financial and educational cooperation, migration policy remains a contentious issue between Hungary and the EU. Prime Minister Magyar reiterated Hungary’s commitment to securing its borders and maintaining stringent controls on illegal migration, while still fulfilling its European obligations. He underscored the importance of safeguarding the EU’s external borders and confirmed that Hungary has no intention of setting up migrant camps within its territory.
