At the U20 World Wrestling Championships in Bratislava, Hungary showcased its prowess in Greco-Roman wrestling by capturing three medals. László Koppány emerged as a standout performer, clinching a silver medal in the 130kg weight class. His journey to the final was marked by victories over formidable opponents from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, in the championship match, Koppány faced Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, the reigning world and European champion, who held him to an 8–0 defeat, resulting in a commendable second-place finish.
In the 77kg category, Ferencváros wrestler Zalán Toplak added to Hungary’s medal tally by securing a bronze medal. His path to the podium included entering the repechage round, where he delivered a decisive 10–2 win against Giorgi Gogelashvili of Georgia. This achievement marked Toplak’s first World Championship medal, a significant milestone in his wrestling career.
Petro Zsitovoz contributed another bronze to the Hungarian team’s success in the 67kg division. Despite trailing early in his placement match, Zsitovoz mounted an impressive comeback to defeat Egypt’s U23 world champion, Mohamed Abdelrehim, with an 11–3 scoreline. His performance underscored Hungary’s depth of talent in the sport.
The championships kicked off with Greco-Roman wrestling, a discipline in which Hungary fielded eight athletes from its 22-member delegation. The team’s achievements in Bratislava reflect the country’s strong tradition and ongoing commitment to excellence in wrestling.
