At Sándor Palace, Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok engaged in discussions with a delegation from the Venice Commission to address constitutional issues that have arisen following the country’s recent electoral process. The meeting was attended by Venice Commission President Marta Cartabia, along with Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini and Austrian Commission member Christoph Grabenwarter. The dialogue was centered on the constitutional disputes affecting Hungary’s public institutions.
Earlier in May, President Sulyok reached out to the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional law for expert advice aimed at resolving these constitutional challenges while ensuring alignment with European constitutional norms. This request underscores Hungary’s commitment to seeking external guidance to navigate its legal complexities.
The Venice Commission has agreed to prioritize the examination of this matter and has initiated consultations in Budapest to collect necessary information. This step marks the beginning of a detailed review process intended to provide clarity and direction in addressing the constitutional issues.
In response to the Commission’s involvement, the Presidential Office expressed its approval, emphasizing confidence in the Commission’s ability to deliver recommendations that would assist in maintaining Hungary’s constitutional framework in accordance with European standards. The move is seen as a positive step towards ensuring the country’s legal system remains robust and compliant with continental principles.
