Greek Economy to Outpace Eurozone Despite Inflation Challenges Through 2028

Greece’s economy is projected to grow at a pace faster than the eurozone average through 2028, as reported by the Bank of Greece. Despite facing challenges such as rising inflation and elevated energy prices, the country’s economic outlook remains robust compared to its regional counterparts.

According to economic projections, Greece’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand by 2% in 2026, 1.9% in 2027, and return to 2% in 2028. These figures indicate a stronger growth trajectory compared to the wider eurozone, which saw a growth rate of 1.2% in the second quarter of 2026, contrasted with Greece’s 1.9% year-on-year growth during the same period.

Key drivers of this economic activity include household consumption, investment, and exports. The second quarter data highlighted a 1.7% increase in private consumption, a significant 6.1% rise in investment, and a 2.2% growth in exports of goods and services compared to the previous year. However, the growth in imports outpaced that of exports, which underscores the importance of strengthening domestic production and expanding export capacity.

Inflation remains a significant concern, particularly in the sectors of energy and services, potentially impacting household purchasing power and the overall economic outlook in the coming years. The Bank of Greece underscores the need to address these inflationary pressures to sustain the country’s economic momentum.
