In a recent session of the European Parliament, members from Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP group expressed their dissatisfaction with the European Commission’s silence regarding Hungary’s latest constitutional and political shifts. They argue these changes threaten the integrity of democratic institutions within the country.
During a joint hearing of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to clarify its stance on various issues. These include new constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, alterations impacting parliamentary mandates, and concerns about the autonomy of state institutions.
The Hungarian lawmakers noted that the European Commission had previously expressed apprehensions about the rule of law in Hungary and had even withheld EU funds as a result. However, they criticized the Commission for not addressing the recent developments that continue to raise questions about their alignment with European democratic norms.
The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation emphasized that democratic values must be upheld uniformly across all EU member countries. Despite the concerns presented, representatives from the Commission did not offer comprehensive answers to the inquiries made during the discussion.
