Calling the conflict in Ukraine a “deadly, but ridiculous war,” President Donald Trump has laid out his unconventional, two-part economic plan that he claims will bring it to a swift end. The strategy, shared on social media, bypasses military solutions in favor of aggressive trade and energy policies.
The first component of his plan is a direct challenge to his NATO allies. Trump has promised to enact “major Sanctions on Russia,” but only on the condition that every member of the alliance first stops buying Russian oil. He believes this is the single most effective way to cut funding to the Kremlin.
The second component targets Russia’s primary economic partner, China. Trump has proposed that NATO should act as a collective to impose “50% to 100% tariffs on China,” a move designed to make Beijing’s support for Moscow financially untenable. These tariffs, he says, would be removed once peace is achieved.
Trump presents this plan with immense confidence, stating, “If NATO does as I say, the war will end quickly.” His characterization of the war as “ridiculous” and his focus on purely economic leverage underscore his unique and often controversial approach to international crises.
