The recent state visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the growing strategic alliance between the two nations, characterized by years of collaboration in political, economic, and cultural fields. Established in 1972, the diplomatic relationship between the UAE and Germany has blossomed over time, with significant developments in trade and investment. Last year, the bilateral trade volume reached Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), solidifying the UAE’s position as Germany’s predominant trading partner in the Gulf region.
Germany’s presence in the UAE is marked by around 2,000 companies, including industry giants such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. In addition to business exchanges, the partnership has evolved in the energy sector. The two countries actively collaborate on projects related to renewable energy, climate change mitigation, decarbonization efforts, and ensuring energy security. A notable milestone was the 2022 agreement enhancing energy security and industrial cooperation, which included UAE’s liquefied natural gas supplies to Germany and joint ventures focusing on clean energy and climate change initiatives.
Beyond economic and energy cooperation, the UAE and Germany have fostered a long-standing partnership in areas such as research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. This multifaceted relationship was formally strengthened in 2004 through a strategic partnership agreement that addressed regional security, economic collaboration, and research development.
Despite the prevailing global political and economic uncertainties, the bilateral relations between the UAE and Germany remain robust. Both nations continue their commitment to expanding cooperation across various strategic sectors, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in maintaining a mutually beneficial partnership.
