Hungary’s Access to Frozen EU Funds Still Pending, Affecting Economic Prospects.

by admin477351

The European Commission has dismissed suggestions that Hungary has accessed or obtained billions of euros in European Union funds that were previously frozen. Contrary to these claims, Hungary has not yet filed an official request for payments under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), according to the Commission. The deadline for Hungary to submit the necessary documentation is September 30, 2026.

The Commission clarified that it will only assess whether Hungary has met the required reforms and “super milestones” after receiving the formal payment request. This indicates that the review process is still pending, and there is no confirmation yet that all the stipulated conditions have been fulfilled. As part of the RRF process, Hungary must first demonstrate that the necessary reforms and investments have been carried out. The European Commission will then scrutinize the submission before any funds can be released following approval.

All payments that are approved must be completed by December 31, 2026, as stated by the Commission. However, if any issues are identified with Hungary’s submission, the process could face delays due to the need for additional documentation or corrections. The Commission’s statement comes in response to assertions from the TISZA government claiming that Hungary had effectively secured these EU funds, which have been frozen.

The European Commission’s response emphasizes that the funds have not been transferred yet, and the final decision is still under review. This development highlights the ongoing scrutiny and procedural requirements that member states must fulfill to access funds under the EU’s recovery mechanism. The situation remains dynamic as Hungary works towards meeting the EU’s conditions to unlock the financial assistance.
