As temperatures soar to unprecedented levels, countries including Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina have implemented red heat alerts and advised residents to remain indoors during peak heat hours. Cities like Budapest, Belgrade, and Bucharest are among the hardest hit, experiencing dangerously high temperatures.
Germany, enduring the heat for a third day with temperatures surpassing 40°C, has seen significant disruptions in transportation as the scorching weather has damaged railway and tram systems. In response, numerous countries have set up cooling centers to protect those most vulnerable to the extreme conditions. The intense heat has also heightened the risk of wildfires, leading to firefighting efforts in southern Europe. The heat has led to increased electricity consumption, placing further strain on an energy system already compromised by war-related damage.
