Zelensky Says US Proposes Miami Talks as Pressure Mounts for June Resolution

by admin477351

The United States has proposed hosting Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations in Miami next week and established a June deadline for ending the conflict, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This represents a notable advancement in American mediation efforts.
In remarks to reporters made public early Saturday, Zelensky disclosed that Washington’s invitation to host Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams in Miami would be unprecedented in the war’s history. The proposal demonstrates the US government’s willingness to provide American territory as neutral ground for the adversaries. “They say that they want to do everything by June,” Zelensky emphasized, highlighting the compressed timeline for diplomatic efforts.
The planned Miami session would be the third round of US-brokered negotiations, following two previous meetings in Abu Dhabi that commenced in January. The Abu Dhabi talks produced one significant achievement—a major prisoner exchange—but made no headway on territorial disputes. Russia maintains military control over roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory and is demanding both recognition of this occupation and further territorial gains in the eastern Donetsk region.
Ukraine has categorically opposed any territorial concessions, arguing that sovereign territory must be defended regardless of military circumstances. Moscow has stated that its territorial conditions are non-negotiable and has warned it will pursue military solutions if negotiations do not produce acceptable outcomes. This fundamental disagreement on borders and sovereignty continues to prevent meaningful progress toward a lasting peace settlement.
While diplomatic channels remain open, combat operations persist. Zelensky announced on Saturday that Russian forces had attacked facilities critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations the night before. The strikes caused reductions in power generation at several nuclear reactor units, with one unit undergoing an automatic emergency shutdown. Zelensky condemned the attacks as unprecedented acts of terrorism and insisted that Russia must demonstrate commitment to negotiations by ending strikes on essential civilian infrastructure.
