Hungarian PM Orbán Defends Christian Values at St. Michael’s Cathedral Reopening

by admin477351

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delivered a passionate address at the re-consecration of St. Michael’s Cathedral in Veszprém, emphasizing Hungary’s enduring Christian heritage and warning against the rise of anti-Christian sentiment in Europe. He described Christianity as the foundation of Hungary’s national identity, asserting that faith and history are inseparable elements of the nation’s character.
Orbán highlighted the cathedral’s deep historical significance, noting that its foundation stones were laid by Blessed Gisela, Hungary’s first queen. He stressed that Saint Stephen’s choice of Christianity was not only a religious act but also a defining moment that shaped Hungary’s moral and cultural direction for centuries.
Reflecting on past persecution of the Church, including the imprisonment of clergy and suppression of religious institutions during the communist era, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to defending Christian communities. He noted that over the past decade, Hungary has renovated nearly 4,000 churches and built more than 200 new ones across the Carpathian Basin.
Orbán contrasted Hungary’s approach with what he called Western Europe’s “civilization of church demolishers,” where church attendance and preservation have declined. He concluded by reaffirming Hungary’s dedication to family, faith, and sovereignty, pledging continued support for preserving the nation’s Christian and cultural foundations.
