Fueled by an Independence Day poll showing overwhelming public support, Elon Musk has officially launched the “America Party.” The billionaire’s new political endeavor aims to secure a pivotal role in Congress by targeting a select number of winnable House and Senate seats, thereby influencing major legislative outcomes amid the current tight margins.
Musk’s poll on X, which saw over 65% of 1.25 million respondents vote “yes” to the creation of a new party, served as the immediate impetus for his announcement. He framed the initiative as a quest for “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system,” criticizing the established political order for “bankrupting our country with waste & graft.”
The formation of the “America Party” also marks a significant shift in Musk’s relationship with former ally President Donald Trump. Despite having been a major financial backer of Trump’s 2024 campaign and serving in his administration’s “department of government efficiency,” Musk’s opposition to a recent $3.3 trillion spending bill proved to be a breaking point.
Musk’s strategy hinges on the idea that even a small contingent of “America Party” representatives could hold the deciding vote on contentious legislation, given the extremely close votes seen in Congress, such as the one on the recent spending bill. This strategic focus sets the stage for the party to make its mark in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
